"The World's Image Centre" was founded in 1803 by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester, Major Charles Carroll, and Colonel William Fitzhugh. They began a colony with two other landowners and formed streets. Rochester was known as "The Young Lion of the West", in its early days and then, because it was the largest flour producing city in the United States, as the "Flour City". The abolitionist newspaper, The North Star began life in Rochester, too.
